Concept by Bruno Duarte | Artistic residency in Lugo - Spain
April 5th, 2024, at the Auditorio Municipal Gustavo Freire, Lugo - Spain (premiere)
51' | ages 6 and over
Inspired by the traditional Festas dos Rapazes (boys’ festivities) that, throughout the Northeast of Trás-os-Montes, Portugal and Galiza in tneighboring Spain, span the twelve-day period between Christmas and Three Kings Day (January 6), “Inverno” (Winter), in this new version for a cast of six dancers, seeks to encapsulate the essence of these different celebratory practices and rituals.
On stage, but with a feeling of open skies, we seek to immerse ourselves in these villages where tradition intertwines with the land and the music of the bagpipes merges with the animalistic screams of the masked men. In these stone streets, boys (and today, as here, girls too), heirs of a festive lineage, celebrate with ancestral fervor. At dawn, among caretos, demons, chants and the ashes of the bonfires, the secrets of the past year whisper in the wind and the streets come to life with the vibrant colors of traditional costumes that echo times gone by.
In the shadow of saints and rituals, the boys' festivities are rituals of cleansing and rebirth that blend the sacred and the profane and it was in them that, seeking to honor our roots, we found the inspiration for what is now written on stage.
