On the 5th of July, Companhia de Dança de Almada premieres “Carbono” (Carbon), a new creation by choreographer Bruno Duarte. Designed for unconventional spaces, the piece will be presented at the Monastery of Santa Maria de Alcobaça, as part of the festival's programme Cistermúsica - Festival de Música de Alcobaça.
In this new work, Bruno Duarte proposes to cross his choreographic universe with the artistic domain of another creator, taking as a conceptual basis the work of the multidisciplinary artist Horácio Frutuoso (1991), whose production includes visual poetry, painting, installation, digital image and performance.
“Carbono” (Carbon) explores the idea of translation as a process that is not only technical but creative and, in a way, transformative – the American expression “lost in translation” illustrates this well. The author emphasizes his perspective, “ in a translation process, whether textual or communicative, or even from thought to concrete movement, there is a danger (real and almost inevitable) of the result being contaminated by the experiences, expectations and prejudices of the translator who, here, functions as a fallible sheet of carbon paper”.
By creating to an unconventional, real, palpable space, different from the uncharacterized space that is a traditional stage, he seeks to expand this concept towards spatiality - such as Frutuoso's work, which seems to explode and print itself against the walls of each space where it is presented - and to question the idea of the ephemeral nature of dance, asking: can dance leave a trace?
Bruno Duarte has a Master degree in Dance Teaching and a degree in Dance from Escola Superior de Dança in Lisbon. Since 2013, he has been a member of Companhia de Dança de Almada, as resident choreographer, dancer and teacher at the dance school. Since 2011, he has created and co-created several pieces, for the stage and video dance, presented in different countries. He has taught workshops at the Beijing Dance Theater (China), Giro8 Companhia de Dança (Brazil), FreeDance (Croatia), amongst others. He’s been a guest teacher at several dance schools in Portugal.
Before the premiere in Alcobaça, “Carbono” will be presented in a preview at Solar dos Zagallos, in Sobreda - Almada, on July 1st, at 4 pm.
