Believing in the importance of experimentation and artistic freedom, the artistic direction of Companhia de Dança de Almada invited young Portuguese choreographers Carolina Cantinho and Hugo Marmelada to create original pieces, based on their own individual research, in artistic residences with the company's dancers.
Carolina Cantinho is the co-founder of CAMADA - Centro Coreográfico, in Faro, where she has been artistic director since 2020. She has received international choreography awards, including Most Innovative Choreography at the Dance World Cup (Bucharest, 2015), 1st place at the Netherlands Choreography Competition (Harlem, 2017) and Best Choreography and Innovation Award at the VIBE Dance Competition (Vienna, 2019). In “quanto tempo o tempo tem?”, she proposes to reflect on the ephemerality of time and the constant pressure it exerts on us.
Hugo Marmelada has presented his work in various spaces and festivals, with emphasis on Riksteatern, in Sweden; Dansens Hus from Oslo; and 16th International Solo-Dance-Theatre Festival Stuttgart, Germany, at which he received the awards for 2nd Best Performance and Audience Award. Inspired by the book “The Call Of The Wild” by Jack London, in “Cracking” (provisional title) the author has as a source of development of the peice the format that the organization of society tends to have on the individual, and the exploration of what is left out , all sensations and actions considered outside the norm.
To complete this programme dedicated to emerging choreographers and taking advantage of Italian choreographer Brian Scalini's recent stay in Portugal, the creation “Wuthering Days” was also included, recreated with three of the company's dancers. In this piece, the choreographer talks about transfers of emotional states in everyday life, and how they happen between those closest to us.
Brian Scalini has been creating for institutions such as Theater Pforzheim, Palucca University of Dance Dresden and Tanzcompagnie Landesbühnen Sachsen, also presenting his own creations at festivals and venues such as Hellerau – European Center for the Arts Dresden, Hong Kong International Dance Festival , Machol Shalem Dance House Israel, Istanbul Fringe Festival, among others. He recently won first prize at the 22nd Certamen Internacional de Choreografia Burgos y Nueva York.
The Emerging Choreographers Programme is an ongoing initiative of Companhia de Dança de Almada, which aims to give space to the artistic creation and promotion of contemporary dance authors who are less known to the public, but whose work deserves the attention of the Company's Artistic Direction, due to its technical and conceptual quality, originality and depth.
The presentation takes place on June 21st, at 9:00 pm, at the Auditório Fernando Lopes-Graça, in Almada.
