Choreography by Bruno Duarte | Artistic residence in Bragança
2019 Season programme, premiered on the 28th November, at Teatro Municipal de Bragança
"These are rituals of youth, full of life and the future, and the activities of the people that were interconnected with them (…) rituals that annually renew their confidence in the continuity of life, symbolized in fire and by other pagan gods.
We will never sufficiently emphasize the role that rituals have played in the evolution of our societies and have given them a character of ethical sanity that manages to maintain dignity in the midst of greater poverty and endless difficulties. "
Amadeu Ferreira, in “O Diabo e as Cinzas” (2013)

Since I was a child, I had very present images that I watched on television, fascinated, made me aware of the winter customs of Trás-os-Montes. Those characters, devils, figures, masks, and rattles, always exerted a special magnetism on me. In the creation of this dance piece, I saw the opportunity to scenically explore the intersection of the ritual sacredness of these ancestral celebrations, with a contemporary dance language. Set between the sacred and the pagan, ancestral and contemporary, human and supernatural, “Inverno” (Winter) seeks to convey the magic that lives in those places at the time of the winter solstice, portraying the pulse of the earth, the emancipation of young people, the streets, the posture of transgression - but so ruled by fixed practices - and the strong cultural mysticism. This is a work about what is alive, but also about memory. About that and those who have already lived in the places we experience today. Bruno Duarte
